Foundation
needs the community’s support
Give Back Day scheduled for Dec. 4 at Park Tavern
BY LORAN PAPROCKI – GUEST COLUMNIST
This
year there will be less to give back in St. Louis Park.
When I say that there will be less to “give back”
I refer to Give Back Day, an event hosted by the St. Louis Park Community Foundation (SLPCF).
In case you aren’t familiar with Give Back Day, it is an annual event where the SLPCF celebrates those nonprofit
organizations which focus on improving the lives of St. Louis Park residents. From
a Boy Scout troop to STEP, these charities provide services for St. Louis Park residents specifically; not folks in Winona
nor in St. Paul, specifically St. Louis Park residents.
As I’ve become involved with SLPCF, I’ve been
pleasantly surprised to find nearly a dozen supported organizations/programs that have touched my family. My kids love the Summer Parks & Rec Playground Programs. This
includes my special-needs son who is able to participate through a helper from Reach for Resources. The SLPCF grants have also helped the Meadowbrook Collaborative, which provides homework helpers for kids
after school. Children First also uses SLPCF grant money as they continue to
promote a healthy atmosphere for the kids growing up in the Park. Grants have
been given to little league baseball, the Junior High Lego League, Westwood Hills, Friends of the Arts, and the list goes
on. This wide range of support is what makes SLPCF a sort of United Way for St.
Louis Park.
Unfortunately, SLPCF will have less to give back this
year…a lot less. Most of SLPCF funds come from the generosity of Phil Webber
and the proceeds from pull tabs at Park Tavern. The sales of pull tabs have been
declining and aren’t expected to increase in the near future. In past years, as much as $50,000 would be distributed
to groups in our city. This year SLPCF will be giving around $12,000; that means
less for STEP, less for Children First, less for our kids, less for the arts. SLPCF,
and the neighborhood organizations that it supports, face a challenging future at a time when their services are most needed
by families throughout our city.
As SLPCF and its Give Back Day touch all lives in the
Park, I would extend an invitation to all our residents to attend Give Back Day this year and celebrate those organizations
which SLPCF will be able to assist this year. I would further invite the residents
to support SLPCF and the many Park organizations who rely on our gifts as they continue to make the Park a wonderful place
to live.

Seeking
Board Members
The St.
Louis Park Community Foundation (SLPCF) is seeking volunteer members from the community to fill vacancies on its Board of
Advisors. Advisors serve 3-year terms (with the option to renew a 2nd term) and are expected to attend monthly meetings. In
addition to the meetings, Board members serve on committees or fulfill volunteer duties that add 3-5 hours per month. The
Board meets the third Thursday of the month at 7:30am at City Hall. Specifically, the
SLPCF seeks a diverse representation of active St. Louis Park residents who have organizational leadership, fundraising/development,
database management, marketing, web and/or grant writing experience. Community members with a strong interest in SLPCF's
mission are encouraged to inquire. Applicants
may contact Board Chair, Jim Rhodes at 612.581.3226 or jr3408@msn.com or any Advisory Board Member
